Year 1 have been learning about 'Creation' in God Matters. We all found lots of God's creation on our school field - we even found a bug!
In maths Year 1 have been sorting objects into groups based on colour and size. We have also been looking in more depth at our numbers to 10, and finding different ways to represent numbers, for example, we used straws, stars and teddies to represent the number 4!
The children walked into school one day to find a crime scene in the classroom! There were 3 porridge bowls - the big one was full or porridge, the medium one was full of porridge and the tiny one had no porridge left! Who could they have belonged to? We used our detective skills to try to find out who it was, and discovered it was Goldilocks! In Literacy we have been writing wanted posters for Goldilocks and we have been writing questions to ask the wolf.
As part of celebrating Diversity week, Year 1 have been reading the story 'Malala's Magic Pencil'. We have been talking about the differences between schools in England and schools in Pakistan. We were given sentences describing different ways of life and resources, and had to sort them into whether that sentence was to describe England or Pakistan. It made us realise how lucky we all are to live in such a free country. As part of Diversity week, we also looked into the lives and accomplishments of musicians: Beyonce and Jay Z! We listened to some of their music and in PE we even made dances to one of their songs! We also had a lovely circle time where we shared where come from, and celebrated this by talking about how special it is that we are all so different!
Spring term 2022
Year 1 have been learning about Paddington Bear and his famous marmalade! In our Literacy lessons, we have been learning about instructions. In class we made jam sandwich, working with a partner and following their instructions exactly. It has been funny to watch as some key words were missed out of some instructions so we had children dipping their fingers in the jam instead of the knife and all sorts! The following day we wrote our instructions for making our jam sandwiches, and we have been focusing on using our cursive writing especially.
In RE we have been learning about Lent and why we make Lenten promises. We realised that it must have been very difficult for Jesus to be in the desert for 40 days and 40 nights! We have been learning the story of Jesus welcoming the children - we acted it out and everyone did so well!
Our RE learning in Year 1
Year 1 welcomed the lovely Emma from St Joseph’s Church to lead a class worship for us! She linked our worship to the Queen and her Platinum Jubilee and explained what it means to serve others.
She explained that the Queen works very hard to serve our country and help us, just as Jesus served others also.
Emma gave us a challenge of drawing or writing one thing we can do to serve others over the half term – and she will be coming back to see whether we have been able to keep our promises!
Here are a few examples of our promises:
- Helping mummy to do the dishes and washing up.
- Helping our friends to feel better when they are hurt on the playground.
